A dramatic sunset on the cliffs at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan.
Hiking along the cliffs and rock formations at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore was an experience that left me amazed and a little bewildered on how this is all created along a lake, not the ocean. Granted it is along the worlds largest lake, Lake Superior, so maybe I shouldn’t have been that surprised. I was lucky enough to do a little backcountry camping in the lakeshore and it was an experience that I won’t soon forget, partly because it just kept raining all evening. But within photographing nature I have learned that there is always a silver lining somewhere, you just have to find it. My silver lining came during the sunset when I was overlooking a natural archway called the ‘Grand Portal’. I had been hiking back and forth looking for good spots to photograph while trying to stay as dry as possible. Then all of a sudden the rain stopped and the clouds parted enough to allow the beautiful sunset colors to come in. Rainstorms can bring in more vibrant sunsets and colors to the rocks and luckily for me mother nature gave me a few moments to capture this wonderfully vibrant sunset. However what mother nature did not do was hold the rain back for my hike back to my tent. Oh well, luckily I had a dry pair of clothes in the tent.
